About Us
Fondasyon Mapou is non-profit corporation of the Washington, DC Metropolitan Area founded in 2004. Fondasyon Mapou was formed by a group of concerned Haitians in response to the crisis that lead to the United States, France and Canada intervention in Haiti; we believe that the international community's action violated the Haitian Constitution and destabilized a nascent democratic process. However the concept to create an organization that seek to change the current Haitian social structure, which engenders a gap in education, promotes economic disparity, consents to disempowerment of the majority of Haitians, had been in the work since 1990.
Fondasyon Mapou works with Haitians at home and abroad, alongside the true friends of Haiti to empower Haitians with skill and knowledge necessary to determine their own future. At present, Fondasyon Mapou serves as a center of information providing in-depth analysis on the situation in Haiti to lawmakers, the media, the Haitian solidarity movement, and religious communities. FM is enabling underprivileged children to obtain an education, establishing network in the US for our partners in Haiti, and many more.
Our Name
Fondasyon Mapou or Mapou Foundation - Mapou is native tree of Haiti, which is illustrated in our logo. For us it symbolizes the rebirth of Haiti through education, sustainable development, economic empowerment, reforestation and soil conservation, justice and equality for a peaceful Haiti. Also, it is under a Mapou tree that enslaved Africans held their first conference on August 14, 1791, better known as the ceremony of Bois Caiman in Milot, Cap-Haitian. This strategic session or summit later served as the cornerstone that guides Haiti through its independence. In addition, the Mapou tree plays a significant role in the vaudou religion.
Our Mission
Fondasyon Mapou (FM) is a community-based organization that promotes sustainable development, human rights and the protection of the environment to enhance the quality of life for marginalized Haitians. FM works for a literate Haitian population through vocational and conflict resolution training that encourage economic prosperity and a peaceful Haiti.
Our Vision
Fondasyon Mapou envisions a self-sufficient, literate Haiti and a Haitian State that protects and respects its citizens' rights; provides social-economic enhancement, increasing educational opportunities and professional development to help marginalized Haitians become more competitive, while building a better Haiti.
Our Motto
Rebuilding Haiti, One Branch at a Time! Haiti has ten (10) geographical departments; each one can be viewed as a branch of Haiti. Likewise, there are numerous Haitian professionals from these various branches or departments residing outside of the country. Fondasyon Mapou believes that a committed and dedicated Haitian Diaspora working alongside Haitians at home must work collaboratively to rebuild Haiti's infrastructure. The Haitian Diaspora has the expertise and experience necessary to reconnect the branches that are needed in Haiti to establish better living standard for marginalized Haitians.
