Earthquake hits Port au Prince, Haiti: tens of thousands presumed dead, Haiti in urgent need of international assistance to locate survivors and help the wounded and homeless!

Good News – Fondasyon Mapou’s Coordinator, Erold Champagne and his family are ok, but living on the street homeless like thousands of his fellow Haitians.

Eugenia’s family is ok and facing the same situation as Erold, but some are still missing. I urge everyone to Haiti keep in the prayers. Haiti had suffered through much devastation by far this worse of them all. Please join us in bringing much needed aid to my brothers and sisters in Haiti.

REPORT FROM EROLD

The aids that are on the ground have not reach Carrefour. The people are traumatized and afraid. There is no water, no food, and no doctors. Up to 1/17 you can still people under the collapses houses calling for help. Bodies throughout the neighborhoods have not been removed, the situation is dire. Area like Leogane, Petit Goave, Grand Goave, Miragoane and les Cayes has not been touched.

7.0 Earthquake devastates Port au Prince, Haiti

Mission Statement: Fondasyon Mapou (FM) is a community-based organization that promotes sustainable development, human rights and the protection of the environment to enhance the quality of life for marginalized Haitians. FM works for a literate Haitian population through vocational and conflict resolution training that encourage economic prosperity and a peaceful Haiti. FM is also involved in providing earthquake relief to Haiti.

On Tuesday, January 12, 2010 a 7.0 magnitude earthquake shook Haiti approximately 10 miles from its capital, Port au Prince. This was the biggest earthquake to hit Haiti in almost a century.  The effects of the earthquake are quite grim: hundreds of buildings across the city have collapsed including the iconic Presidential Palace and National Cathedral and the death toll is conservatively presumed to be in the tens of thousands.  Eyewitnesses are reporting apocalyptic conditions: corpses lining the streets, blood running in the gutters, small children sleeping among the dead bodies; limited access to medical care, food or drinking water.

The headquarters of MINUSTAH, the United Nation stabilization mission in Haiti, also collapsed compromising their ability to respond to the tragedy. But perhaps most tragic effect of the earthquake has been on Haiti’s poorest citizens living in slums of ramshackle dwellings made of found materials whose homes and loved ones are buried under debris, rubble and mudslides. It is these communities who prior to the earthquake, already had limited to no access to electricity and fresh water.  Who will remember to reach out to them?

The US and other countries have pledged immediate support but the aid on the ground is not reaching everyone in needs (when literally every second counts in the search for survivors) because of damaged roads, buildings and towers needed to assist in the delivery of international aid.  With thousands of survivors in urgent need of medical attention and basic supplies, the Haitian government and MINUSTA are unable to meet the overwhelming demand for help.  International aid on the ground still has not reached the people in dire need.  We urge you to help Fondasyon Mapou reach out to the Haitian people.
